Work at the top and help protect the roof on buildings.
Roofers install and repair single-ply or multi-ply roofing systems, shingles, and pre-formed rigid sheeting. They are employed by roofing and general contractors, or they may be self-employed.

Pathways Into the Trade
- Direct Entry
Start working with a certified journeyperson and begin your apprenticeship right away - no experience needed. Most apprentices spend about 80% of their time on the job and 20% in training. - Trade Experience
If you already have experience – whether in Canada or internationally – you may be able to challenge the trade qualifier exam and become certified.
Working Conditions
- Perform outdoor work in all seasons and weather conditions
- Perform physically demanding work involving lifting, climbing, kneeling and balancing
- Work on residential, commercial, industrial and institutional buildings
- Follow strict safety procedures while working at heights and around construction hazards
- Use hand tools, power tools, access equipment and fall protection systems
