Use your skills to reinforce and make structures stronger.
An Ironworker (Reinforcing) cuts, bends, lays out, places, and welds reinforcing steel rods, welded wire fabric and composite materials in poured concrete products and structures. Places and stresses post-tensioning systems.

Pathways Into the Trade
- Direct Entry
Start working with a certified journeyperson and begin your apprenticeship right away - no experience needed. Most apprentices spend about 80% of their time on the job and 20% in training. - Trade Experience
If you already have experience – whether in Canada or internationally – you may be able to challenge the trade qualifier exam and become certified.
Working Conditions
- Work on bridges, highways, buildings, stadiums and infrastructure projects
- Install reinforcement in foundations, columns, walls and slabs
- Work outdoors in all weather conditions and occasionally underground
- Work at heights, in small spaces and challenging environments
- Use cranes, rigging equipment, hydraulic jacks and specialized tools
- Perform physically demanding work involving lifting, climbing and reaching
- Follow safety procedures
