Boat builders build seagoing boats for fishing or charter; fast patrol boats; and custom or semi-custom pleasure boats, power and sail, in all major hull materials.

Pathways Into the Trade
- Direct Entry
Start working with a certified journeyperson and begin your apprenticeship right away - no experience needed. Most apprentices spend about 80% of their time on the job and 20% in training. - Trade Experience
If you already have experience – whether in Canada or internationally – you may be able to challenge the trade qualifier exam and become certified.
Working Conditions
- Work in boatyards, marine manufacturing facilities, and repair shops
- Build and repair fishing boats, pleasure craft and commercial vessels
- Use hand tools, power tools and specialized marine equipment
- Work with wood, fibreglass, composites, resins and metals
- Physical work involving lifting, climbing and working in tight spaces
- Follow strict safety, environmental and quality standards
