If you have experience in a designated trade but do not hold certification, there are two ways to obtain a Certificate of Qualification and become a certified journeyperson in Nova Scotia:
1. Complete an Apprenticeship Program
2. Challenge the Certification Examination as a Trade Qualifier
If you are an internationally trained worker, the province of Nova Scotia offers various supports to assist with immigration and working in Nova Scotia. Click here for further information.
Please note: If you hold certification issued by another regulatory authority (from within or outside of Canada) in a trade that is also designated in Nova Scotia, you may be eligible to apply for certification under another program. Click here for more information on credential recognition.
1. Complete an Apprenticeship Program
If you have experience and training in a trade, but need the benefit of further theoretical or practical training, apprenticeship may be the best option. Your previous experience and training may entitle you to receive advanced standing in the apprenticeship program.
After you have found an employer and signed an apprenticeship agreement, you will be eligible to receive subsidized theoretical training to compliment your on-the-job training before you write the certification examination. Click here to find out how to become a registered apprentice.
2. Challenge the Certification Examination as a Trade Qualifier
If you do not have a trade certification, Section 30 of the General Regulations of the Apprenticeship and Trades Qualifications Act makes provision for persons other than registered apprentices to be examined for a Certificate of Qualification.
If you have extensive experience in a trade and can prove that your skills and work experience meet the standards set for a certified skilled tradesperson in Nova Scotia, you may be able to achieve certification by writing the trade examination. You will need letters of reference from two qualified trades people as well as letters from employers proving you have completed the required number of hours of hands-on work in the trade.
