The following information outlines how to become an apprentice if you have an employer in Nova Scotia. If you have an out-of-province employer, click here for
out-of-province registration information.
1. To become an apprentice, you must be employed in your trade and
there must be at least one certified journeyperson per apprentice at the
workplace (except in the case of youth apprentices, individuals 16 to 19
years old).
If you are currently working in one of the compulsory certified trades,
contact the apprenticeship office nearest you (or call toll-free 1-800-494
5651) to obtain a temporary permit which allows you to continue to work in the
trade while the registration process takes place.
2. Discuss the apprenticeship program with your employer and find out if they are
willing to sign an apprenticeship agreement with you.
3. Contact the Training Officer responsible for your trade/region. The
Training Officer will arrange to meet with you and your employer at your
workplace to provide the information and documents required for you to become
an apprentice. The Training Officer will also discuss your previous work
experience, how to access technical training and how your progress in the
apprenticeship program is documented in a logbook.
Please note: There is a registration fee if you are 20 years of age or older. |
