If you have secured employment in another province in Canada, you have two options to become an apprentice:
1. Contact the apprenticeship office in the province in which you are working (outside of Nova Scotia) and become an apprentice in that province.
2. If you are maintaining your residency in Nova Scotia and will return there during your apprenticeship to access apprenticeship technical training, you may be eligible to become an apprentice in Nova Scotia with an out-of-province employer.
How to register as an apprentice with an out-of-province employer
As a potential apprentice, you and your employer must complete and forward the documents noted in the list below to the Training Officer responsible for your trade/region in your home province of Nova Scotia.
- The potential apprentice provides a notarized Declaration of Nova Scotia Residency which states that the potential apprentice qualifies as a Nova Scotia resident under the Canada Revenue Agency’s definition.
- The employer and potential apprentice complete and sign the 3-part copy of the official apprenticeship agreement.
- The apprenticeship agreement must be obtained from the Training Officer responsible for the potential apprentice's trade/region in their home province of Nova Scotia (it is a 3-part carbon copy, and therefore can not be downloaded or faxed).

- If a potential apprentice is having difficulty obtaining an apprenticeship agreement (for example, working in a remote location), they may forward all documents noted in the first five bullets above to the Training Officer. (If both the potential apprentice and employer meet apprenticeship registration eligibility requirements, the Training Officer will ensure that they both receive an apprenticeship agreement by mail).
Registration costs
The registration fee to become an apprentice in Nova Scotia is $133.29 if you are 20 years of age and older, and $13.40 if you are 19 years of age or younger.
The method of payment (certified cheque, company cheque, money order or VISA/Mastercard information), must be indicated on the Release of Electronic Photograph Form.
What happens next
Once you are registered as an apprentice (ie, your registration fee and all out-of-province registration documents have been received and approved), the Training Officer will prepare and send you a logbook and the current year's Apprenticeship Training and Examination Schedule. |
